| Message from the President |
The close of 2009 marks a very productive and busy year for LCLAA. We’ve led the fight and worked in coalition on behalf of Latino working families and union members on Health Care, Labor-Law reform, Green Jobs and the Environment, Hate Crimes, Immigration and many other shared priorities. We helped make history working closely with the Administration and Congress on two truly groundbreaking appointments; Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor. LCLAA worked in coalition with other Latino organizations to encourage the new administration to increase the number of Latinos appointed to important government positions; an area in where our community is historically underrepresented. A longtime friend of LCLAA, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, was appointed as Secretary of Labor. LCLAA worked with the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) to make sure her confirmation was smooth and without delays. LCLAA staff worked with the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Senate Majority Leader, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and other Latino organizations on strategy and outreach during the confirmation process of Justice Sonia Sotomayor. In order to bring attention to issues affecting Latino working families, LCLAA developed a strong national media strategy that successfully brings Labor’s perspective to Latino print, television, radio and online media outlets like Univision and Telemundo but also in mainstream media like CNN, NPR and The Huffington Post. As we look to 2010, the opportunities to improve the lives for Latino working families are many and more crucial than ever. With your help, LCLAA will be up for the task. Our Labor movement needs to grow and increase its appeal to younger workers. LCLAA has a vital role to play in this growth. Latinos represent the youngest members of the U.S. workforce and are quickly becoming a key to the future of the Labor Movement. LCLAA’s strength lies not only in our work nationally but also in growing strong chapters across the country, increasing our grassroots organizing capacity and engaging our members to take action in their communities. Our agenda for the New Year is rapidly taking shape and includes the following; Health Care Reform The 2010 Census Labor Law Reform Immigration Reform Climate Change and Green Jobs 2010 Elections Employee Free Choice Act LCLAA National Convention As 2009 comes to a close, LCLAA looks forward to a New Year, advancing opportunities for our community and welcomes your voice and your leadership in the fight! In solidarity, Milton Rosado |
