Workers’ memorial day

Workers Memorial Day

Dear Familia LCLAA,

As we observe Workers Memorial Day, we gather in solemn reflection to honor the lives lost and the injuries endured in workplaces across our nation. This date serves as a poignant reminder to cherish the memory of those who have tragically fallen victim to preventable workplace accidents and to recommit ourselves to the tireless pursuit of ensuring the safety and well-being of all workers.

Regrettably, with each passing day, over 340 individuals succumb to the perils of unjust working conditions, their lives needlessly cut short. This year, we pay tribute to Miguel Luna from El Salvador, Maynor Suazo Sandoval from Honduras, Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico, and Dorlian Ronial from Guatemala, the six workers who tragically perished in the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26th in Baltimore, Maryland.

Latino workers, in particular, face disproportionate risks, with 64% of workplace fatalities affecting Latino immigrants. The plight of farmworkers underscores the urgent necessity for equitable and comprehensive legislation to safeguard all workers, irrespective of their heritage or ethnicity, especially during the summer months when oppressive temperatures in the fields jeopardize their lives.

It is morally reprehensible that Latino workers continue to bear the brunt of inadequate protections and systemic injustices.

The commemoration of Workers Memorial Day is a pivotal platform for workers, unions, safety advocates, and policymakers to raise awareness about workplace hazards, champion robust safety regulations, and demand accountability from employers and government agencies entrusted with upholding workplace safety standards.

This day underscores the imperative of recognizing the inherent value of every worker's life and well-being, fostering a workplace culture grounded in equality, safety, and dignity. We pledge to persist in our pursuit of safe and secure jobs, unwavering in our resolve until our voices resound and our rights are fully vindicated.

In Solidarity,

Labor Note Conference, Chicago

On April 12th, Governor Ron DeSantis, from Florida signed the HB433 Law placing profits above people, stripping local governments of their authority to implement crucial worker safeguards, specially for farm and construction workers. LCLAA strongly condemned this decision that denies workers, who face challenges in extreme heat conditions, the basic protections necessary for their well-being.
