LCLAA Applauds the Introduction of Latina Equal Pay Day Resolution
Washington, DC - LCLAA applauds the bicameral introduction of the Latina Equal Pay Day Resolution by Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernandez, and Congresswoman Nanette Diaz Barragán. The resolution recognizes the stark pay disparity that still exists for Latinas in this country and acknowledges how the pay gap negatively affects not only Latinas but our community and our country as a whole.
Yesterday on Latina Equal Pay Day, we were reminded that Latinas continue to be underestimated, undervalued, and underpaid. Even now, Latinas, on average, earn only 54 cents for every dollar paid to a white non-Hispanic man, the lowest average of all race/ethnicity and gender groups. The pay disparity not only lowers Latina earnings but also limits the Latino community's ability to save and build intergenerational wealth. For this reason, LCLAA has remained fierce in its commitment to closing the Latina Pay Gap and has remained adamant that unionizing and collective bargaining are the best solution.
While Congress can and should introduce further legislation to make it easier for women and Latinas to unionize, yesterday's resolution is a step forward for our country.
