LCLAA Celebrates 50 Years of Advocacy, Growth and Empowerment
Fifty years ago, a group of Latino labor leaders saw the labor movement as an avenue for change. They fought to have their own space in the House of Labor based on the belief that all workers - regardless of race, immigration status, or gender - deserve to be paid a living wage and have a safer workplace.
In the last five decades LCLAA has preserved by ensuring that our Latino voice is not only in labor but in politics and the spaces where decisions are made. We continue to advocate for the union difference, fighting for safer working conditions, fair pay, better benefits, and a voice on the job. Our members have advocated against the use of poisonous chemicals in the fields that endanger farmworkers and communities. We have been on the front line calling for immigration policies to make it easier for our workforce to become U.S. citizens, and we have advocated for student loan forgiveness to make joining the middle class a more real possibility.
LCLAA has expanded to reach new regions and to tackle new issues. We have welcomed new chapters throughout the country, such as our Pacific Northwest Chapter and in response to new challenges, LCLAA has acted to defend the rights of its members.
We have launched programming to empower workers, such as our current day Trabajadoras Fellowship which provides Latinas which equips over 180 Latinas with the training and knowledge they need to become pay equity champions.
LCLAA is thrilled to honor 50 years of advocacy, growth, and empowerment at our Anniversary Gala this week in Washington D.C. For those who are unable to attend, the Anniversary Gala will be live streamed on our Facebook and Instagram pages. We look forward to celebrating this incredible milestone along with our leadership, our strong allies, and our incredible members.
