LCLAA Commemorates the 54th Anniversary of Stonewall
Washington, DC - The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) proudly joins the global LGBTQ+ community in commemorating the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. This milestone marks 54 years since the pivotal events of June 28th, 1969, and is a poignant reminder of the persisting struggle for equality, justice, and inclusion for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
Despite the notable progress that has been achieved, our society has witnessed a distressing surge in anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and violence on a national scale. Over the past year alone, more than 300 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced at the state level. This has had a profound impact on LGTBQ+ workers, with over half reporting instances of workplace discrimination or harassment in 2022, solely because of their identity.
As an unwavering advocate for the advancement of workers' rights, our organization strives to empower and uplift LGBTQ+ individuals, combat workplace discrimination, and champion the implementation of fair policies that benefit all employees.
Yanira Merino, National President of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement on the anniversary, “Pride month serves as a celebration of the extraordinary diversity within our society while also echoing the resounding calls that emerged from the Stonewall riots all those years ago. The LGTBQ+ community, like the Civil Rights movement and the labor movement, has embraced the beauty and power of collective action in the name of justice. It is our duty, as champions of human rights, to extend our solidarity to the LGBTQ+ members of our communities, particularly as they face an alarming surge of assaults on their rights before our very eyes.”
