WASHINGTON – The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) wholeheartedly commends the decision of the House Judiciary Committee to include a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented Americans in the budget reconciliation bill and congratulates Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler on his leadership. The committee’s decision represents a milestone in the struggle for labor and civil rights for undocumented Americans because, if passed in its current form, it would allow for DREAMers, TPS holders, and eligible farmworkers to apply for a Green Card. It would also establish a path to permanent residency and eventually citizenship for thousands of others.
If passed, this measure is expected to significantly improve the conditions of undocumented Latinos by allowing them to exert their labor rights without fear of deportation. It would also contribute to the economy as a whole by making a huge segment of the population eligible for pandemic recovery programs designed to stimulate our economy.
In the coming weeks, the provisions passed by the Judiciary Committee will be voted on by the House and reconciled with appropriations legislation passed by the Senate. LCLAA will continue to monitor this process closely and advocate that the provisions adopted by the committee be voted into law.
