LCLAA Commends the Reintroduction of the Paycheck Fairness Act

Washington, DC - LCLAA commends the reintroduction of the Paycheck Fairness Act, legislation that would build upon the Equal Pay Act of 1963 to strengthen workers’ rights and make pay equity more of a reality in our country.

Sixty years ago when the Equal Pay Act was introduced it was a monumental bill that sought to protect workers from pay discrimination. However, for years corporations have exploited the bill’s weak points to avoid being held accountable. The Paycheck Fairness Act will close these gaps, strengthen remedies and enforcements, and ensure that women can challenge pay discrimination.

The reintroduction of this bill comes after years of continued advocacy, lobbying, and education by the labor movement, womens’ rights organizations, key allies and notably the Paycheck Fairness Act Coalition.

Karla Pineda Santos, Deputy Director of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement on the reintroduction, “In the last six decades we have seen extraordinary progress in the number of women in the workforce, but this progress has not been reflected in our wages. Women are only paid about three quarters for every dollar a man is paid, and for Latinas the disparity only widens. LCLAA has been a fierce advocate for fair pay for all workers – regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, or sexuality and we have been a proud member of the Paycheck Fairness Act Coalition. We are proud to see our elected officials stand for economic equality and we urge all Members of Congress to follow through and usher this bill to the finish line.”
