LCLAA Denounces Texas Legislature's Passage of Anti-Immigration Bills
Washington, DC - The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) vehemently denounces the recent actions of the Texas Legislature in passing two regressive anti-immigration bills that not only jeopardize the rights of migrants but also impact U.S. citizens. The votes cast in favor of these bills reek of white supremacy and reflect a vengeful approach by Texas politicians who seem more concerned with targeting those who are least able to protect themselves.
The passage of Senate Bill 4 (88-4) establishes a new state crime for unauthorized entry or reentry into Texas from a foreign country. This legislation empowers local and state law enforcement officers who lack proper training in immigration law, to arrest and prosecute individuals suspected of violating the law. Furthermore, it grants Texas magistrates and certain judges the authority to order a person's deportation without due process, undermining the principles of justice and fairness.
In addition to S.B. 4, the Legislature passed Senate Bill 3, providing Governor Greg Abbott with an additional $1.5 billion in taxpayer dollars for border-related operations. This includes funding for a border wall, increased use of razor wire, and floating barriers in the Rio Grande. At a time when Texas should be prioritizing improvements in infrastructure, medical care, and education, the allocation of funds toward these measures seems to be misguided.
LCLAA firmly believes that the focus should be on addressing critical issues such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, rather than promoting divisive and harmful legislation. These anti-immigration bills not only perpetuate fear and scapegoating but also divert resources from pressing societal needs.
"We stand united against these destructive laws that only serve to marginalize and victimize individuals," said Jose Vargas, LCLAA’s Executive Director. "It is disheartening to witness politicians prioritizing divisive measures over the well-being of their constituents. LCLAA pledges its continued vigilance against such detrimental legislation and will collaborate with our chapters across the country to educate our members about these destructive processes."
LCLAA urges all individuals and organizations committed to justice and equality to join in the fight against these harmful bills and to advocate for policies that uphold the dignity and rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.
