LCLAA on the Title 42 Ruling
Washington, DC - LCLAA applauds yesterday’s ruling that struck down Title 42, the measure that denied asylum to thousands of migrants over the last few years and forced many to return to dangerous, life-threatening circumstances. Last month, the policy expelled nearly 40 percent of migrants who crossed the southern border.
With the blockage of this measure, migrants, who are primarily Black, Brown and Indigenous, can once again have their asylum claims processed and will no longer be expelled to their home countries. However, this ruling only reminds us of the desperate need for immigration reform. Even as Title 42 was in effect, the United States failed to have sufficient infrastructure to process immigration claims efficiently, forcing masses of migrants to stay in unhealthy and unsafe holding facilities for extended periods of time.
Yanira Merino, National President of the Labor Council of Latin American Advancement, on the ruling: “Yesterday’s ruling is a move in the right direction, but we cannot claim victory. Our fight for immigration reform is only finished once we can confidently say that the pathway for migrants in this country is fair, feasible, and safe. Until then, LCLAA, its members, and its allies must continue to push our government towards progress.”
