LCLAA on This Year’s Celebration of Juneteenth

Washington, DC - Today on Juneteenth the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) reflects on the profound significance of this historic day. We commemorate this vital milestone in the fight for freedom, justice, and equality for all.

As an organization deeply committed to these values, LCLAA recognizes the unique and separate history of racism and discrimination that Black Americans have endured in this country. Their voices are crucial in our collective fights for economic justice and for racial equity.

Throughout history, Black Americans have played a pivotal role in the labor movement, striving to improve their working conditions and advance the cause of justice. Even today, the exploitation of Black labor persists under a racist economic system that perpetuates wage disparities, underemployment, and chronic unemployment among Black individuals.

In this vein, we have seen a continued attack on the civil rights of Brown and Black communities with new state regulations designed to disenfranchise marginalized groups, and with litigation continuing to weaken the Voting Rights Act. However, we find hope in recent developments, such as Allen v. Milligan, which protects our nation from discriminatory voting practices and policies.

LCLAA remains steadfast in our commitment to the fight for voting rights, recognizing that the struggle for economic equality and racial equity is inherently intertwined with ensuring fair and equal access to the ballot box. We will continue to advocate for policies that dismantle systemic barriers and empower marginalized communities to exercise their democratic rights. Together, we can work towards a future where every individual's voice is heard and their vote truly counts.
