June: A Month Celebrating Diversity
|
Dear LCLAA members and allies,
June is a month all about celebrating diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. Throughout this month we celebrate different sectors of the Latino community.
During Pride month we celebrate those of us who are LGBT+ and stand in solidarity with them at pride parades, marches and events dedicated to self empowerment and acceptance of the broader community. And later this month we will highlight the pay discrimination still faced by those who identify as part of the LGBT+.
On Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, we educate ourselves on the origin of the holiday, a day which only became federally recognized last year. We join Black communities as they come together to celebrate the emanicipation of ensalved African-Americans and we ask ourselves what else we can do to uplift Afro-Latinos.
To start the month we will center the conversion on Latinas and women as we continue to see the attack on reproductive rights. Our National Staff, in the hopes of understanding what this attack may mean for the Latino community and for labor, hosted a conversation with other labor leaders on their newest episode of El Desvio.
This month we embrace how intersectional and how diverse the Latino community is. We are not a monolith - despite what many may believe. Instead we are a community abundant with differences and we are so much stronger for it.
In solidarity,
Yanira Merino
National President of LCLAA

Earlier today LCLAA released the newest episode of our podcast, El Desvio. The episode titled "Hands off my Reproductive Rights" is now available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Podbean!
On May 2nd, an initial draft majority opinion was leaked showing that the Supreme Court has voted to strike down Roe w. Wade, the court case that guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights. The leak has led to widespread concern nationwide about the decline in reproductive rights in recent years.
Today we want to use our podcast to try and understand the implications this will have for women in the labor force and how access to healthcare, contraceptives, preventative care, and birth control impact working families. The episode includes the voices of labor leaders from the United Federation of Teachers, the Coalition of Labor Union Women and the Latina Institute for Reproductive Rights.
Listen and share with your friends and family! Retweet & like LCLAA's tweet, share our Facebook post, and like our instagram post!
