Dear LCLAA Members and Allies,
For far too long, LGBTQ+ individuals have endured discrimination, inequality, and violence solely because of their identity, impacting their safety and their ability to flourish and excel in and out of the workplace. With the rise in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, it is more crucial than ever that we work collectively to support LGBTQ+ workers. Discriminatory laws have worked to strip LGBTQ+ individuals of their rights, to restrict their self-expression, to censure their history, and are threatening their workplace protections.
However, as we know, through collective bargaining agreements we can include robust anti-discrimination language that explicitly protects LGBTQ+ workers. With these provisions, our movement can promote the equal treatment of all workers, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. These agreements set precedents and help shape workplace norms that prioritize inclusivity and equality for all workers.
The fight for LGBTQ+ workers is ongoing, but together we can work towards creating lasting change that extends beyond individual workplaces. We can gain legal safeguards that shield us from discrimination, ensuring fair treatment and equal opportunities for LGBTQ+ workers.
In solidarity,
Yanira Merino
National President of LCLAA
