EtO: A Danger in the Workplace and a Danger in our Communities

Dear LCLAA Members and Allies,

Recently the EPA found that the chemical ethylene oxide, known as EtO, is much more dangerous than previously understood, raising concerns for workers nationwide. EtO is commonly used in sterilization and healthcare facilities to clean over 20 billion medical devices each year, and workers are a key part of this process.

New research has shown that being exposed to EtO for a long time greatly increases the chances of developing cancer. This means that workers who directly deal with the chemical as part of their job face the highest risk of getting cancer. However, even workers who are not directly handling EtO are still at risk, as well as their families and people who live or spend time near these facilities.

LCLAA is strongly urging the government to provide better protections for the workers who are most at risk. We will be doing this in stride, and will bring our concerns to the Administration and to Members of Congress next week. To keep our communities healthy and our economy strong, our government has to reduce the use of this dangerous chemical.

In solidarity,

Yanira Merino

National President of LCLAA
