The Senate Passes the Inflation Reduction Act
|
Dear LCLAA Members and Allies,
Earlier this week, the Senate passed the Inflation Reduction Act, a critical piece of legislation in our nation’s efforts to support working families. This bill straddles two of LCLAA’s key issues – environmental justice and workers’ rights – as it makes a strong commitment to mitigate climate change, while also creating more domestic jobs in construction and manufacturing with fair wages.
Not only is the bill the largest climate investment in U.S. history, but it keeps workers and union-paying jobs at the forefront, while also lowering the costs of healthcare and the medications that we rely on for our health.
Specifically, I want to applaud the Senate and Senate leadership for listening to LCLAA’s call that was made in solidarity with UNIDOS and 15 other Latino organizations. We urged lawmakers to pass the bill without amendments that would harm Latino communities and immigrants and the Senate followed through as they rejected a series of harsh immigrant enforcement provisions that could have been added to the bill.
This is just a prime example of what our community has the power to accomplish, how we can use our voice, how we can influence policy, and how we can advocate for those we love. However, this bill is not yet a law. There is much more to be done. We must continue to mobilize alongside our Latino brothers, sisters and siblings, and we must take it upon ourselves to usher this bill across the finish line.
In Solidarity,
Yanira Merino
National President of LCLAA

Support Detained Labor Strikers at Mesa Verde Detention Facility and Golden State Annex! The GEO Group made over 2.2 billion dollars last year. Instead of paying employees a fair salary to do custodial work inside the facility, they minimize costs through their “voluntary work program” and pay detained individuals $1 per day to clean the dormitories. Click here to support strikers.
Support Marco "Jose" Topete! Marco is an immigrant and was detained at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center for almost 3 years. While at the detention center, he suffered medical neglect, abuse, sexual harassment, and labor exploitation. Donate to help alleviate the burden of his medical and legal costs! Click here to donate.
Stop Hiding Pay Information From Gig Workers: DoorDash hides pay information from gig workers on purpose, and makes it hard for Dashers to determine whether or not to take a trip. Click here to sign the petition.
