The Danger of Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric

 The Danger of Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric

Dear LCLAA Members and Allies,

July is a month in the United States focused on patriotism. People throughout the country celebrate the birth of our nation and with this, many debate who this country is for.

Anti-immigrant rhetoric has been on the rise. It’s becoming more and more common to stumble onto talks questioning the intentions of immigrants. Many may justify this, defend it, credit the first amendment, and the “uniquely” American right to freedom of speech. Yet, they fail to consider the tangible consequences of language, that language is the vehicle for beliefs.

The more immigrants are villainized, the more likely anti-immigrant beliefs are to become the norm, creating an environment fit for overly harsh immigration policies.  Unfortunately, we’ve seen these consequences. We’ve seen the attack on DACA, the increased obstacles for refugees seeking asylum, and the former chants that called for a wall at the border.

To combat these inaccurate beliefs, we must go into the upcoming midterm elections and take advantage of what we have - our membership, our grassroots connections nationwide, our allies. Collectively we can protect each other and the broader immigrant community.
