Honoring Black History Month and Afro Latino Contributions

Dear Familia LCLAA

As we embark on the month of February, we are presented with the opportunity to celebrate and honor Black History Month, a time to reflect on the rich contributions, struggles, and resilience of the Black community. This year, let us shine a spotlight on the often-overlooked role of Afro-Latino workers, acknowledging their significant contributions to our society.

Afro-Latino workers have played a crucial role in shaping the cultural and economic landscape, yet their stories are sometimes overshadowed. It is essential to recognize and appreciate their dedication, hard work, and the unique challenges they face at the intersection of their African and Latino heritage.

In acknowledging Black History Month, we cannot ignore the disparities and challenges faced by both Latino and Black communities. From systemic racism to economic inequality, these communities have confronted obstacles that demand our collective attention and commitment to change.

One aspect that requires our urgent consideration is the wage gap and disparities among Latina, Afro-Latina, and Black women compared to their white male counterparts. Despite their invaluable contributions, these women often find themselves on the wrong side of wage inequality, struggling against systemic barriers that hinder their professional and economic advancement.

May this month serve as a reminder of the rich tapestry of contributions made by Afro-Latino workers, as well as an inspiration for solidarity among communities to overcome challenges and build a more just and equitable future.

In Solidarity,

Evelyn DeJesus

LCLAA National President

Latino Workers and Unions: A Strategic Partnership for America’s Success.

The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement’s  (LCLAA) report, presented on January 30th at the headquarters of the AFL-CIO revealed the important role Unions play in improving the working conditions and quality of life of Latino Workers.

“This report describes the great contributions of Latinos in the country. But it also shows us the great obstacles and challenges they continue to face in their jobs, the lack of access to health insurance, or the salary disparity among trabajadoras latinas. This report, also tells us about the more active role that unions are having in this critical time”, said Evelyn DeJesus, presidenta National.
