Honoring our History and Heritage
|
Dear LCLAA Members and Allies,
During National Latino Heritage Month, we celebrate nuestra latinidad. We celebrate the Latinos that have defied the norm and that have achieved greatness. We celebrate the artists that have inspired us, the scholars that have taught us, and the activists and the leaders that have fought for us.
In this effort, we pay tribute to the contributions of our own organization. As the key advocate for Latino workers, LCLAA is ingrained into the history of Latinos in this country.
Over these last five decades we have made job opportunities more accessible for our community through events like the National Conference on Jobs for Hispanic Americans or through our current day El Avance. We have rallied in key marches, like the Solidarity Day March, to stand for our right to organize. We have created programming ranging from our former Amnesty Assistant Program to our current Trabajadoras Fellowship to support immigrant and female workers.
For fifty years, we have been relentless in our work to improve the lives of Latino workers, but we have much more work to do. We have seen obstacles persist and have seen new ones appear. As we have witnessed our farm workers continue to face dangerous pesticides in the fields, immigrant workers continue to be turned away from employers and Latinas have yet to be paid their fair share.
I look forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary in Washington, D.C. next week with many of you, but more than anything, I look forward to our continued solidarity in this fight.
In Solidarity,
Yanira Merino
National President of LCLAA
