Dear LCLAA Members and Allies,
Each March our community comes together to honor the contributions of farmworkers that have helped nourish and fuel our families. In more ways than one, farmworkers are and have been essential to our lives.
Yet, for far too long farmworkers have faced unreasonable and unsafe working conditions. Farmworkers are at high risk of heat illness, especially as global warming leads to record breaking temperatures each year, and are too often exposed to toxic pesticides.
In the last year LCLAA alongside farmworkers and environmental organizations have made tremendous strides to protect farmworkers, winning a long battle to make sure pesticides have bilingual labeling, and holding the Administration accountable for still allowing dangerous pesticides to be used.
As we continue to hear stories about farmworkers this week, I ask you all to consider your role in our food industry – whether you are a small business owner, a consumer, or a grower. As the leading Latino Labor organization, it is up to us to look out for our brother and sisters in the fields. I urge you all to support the Fair Food Program, a key program that protects farmworkers from abuse on the job. You can be part of much-needed change by supporting their cause and joining a local Fair Food chapter. Together towards tomorrow.
In solidarity,
Yanira Merino
National President of LCLAA
