Dear LCLAA Members and Allies,
Each April during Sexual Assault Awareness Month we are reminded that for far too many, sexual violence is a very real threat in their workplace. Sexual harassment can happen to anyone, of any gender, in any workplace.
The labor movement has taken deliberate steps to protect workers and those that are the most vulnerable. We have rallied behind bargaining units that have fought to include key measures proven to reduce sexual violence, and we have garnered support for key bills such as the DC Domesitc Workers Bill of Rights.
However, several of these protections are difficult to enforce for workers that are typically paid under the table, that lack formal contracts, are gig-based, or are seasonal. This fight is far from over and LCLAA has a lot of fight left to give – to protect domestic workers, to protect immigrant workers, to protect farm workers, to protect all workers. No individual should have to work in an environment where this is normalized or common.
This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, LCLAA wants to provide our members with information on what sexual violence is and the steps workers can take if they experience it. We hope this can be an educational and useful resource for all.
In solidarity,
Yanira Merino
National President of LCLAA
