Dear LCLAA Members and Allies,
Our country likes to promote progress and productivity. We like to champion both how our movements have pushed the world forward and how our workforce has contributed globally.
Latinas in the labor movement have been leaders in both realms. They have advocated for stronger infrastructure to give workers the chance to reach their highest potential and they are opening businesses at one of the highest rates in the country. Yet, despite all their contributions, Latinas are one of the most underpaid groups in our economy, and are only paid 54 cents for every dollar a White non-Latino man earns.
All workers, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, or sexuality deserve to be paid for their work. Unions champion this and unions enforce this, but it should not be up to us to demand fair pay. We need our policymarkers to pass legislation to create stronger remedies, oversight and enforcement of pay discrimination.
In this vein, I urge you all to join our letter campaign to tell congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, legislation that will strengthen workers’ rights and make pay equity more of a reality in our country. Our workforce deserves to have legislation, like this, that will promote fair pay once and for all!
In solidarity,
Yanira Merino
National President of LCLAA
