Dear LCLAA Members and Allies,
For ten years DACA has given many of the people in our lives the right to remain in their communities and to build their livelihoods. Much of the history of DACA has been tied to the each individuals administration’s attitude towards Latinos. Presidents have taken this policy and treated it like a pawn. They have used it as a symbol to enrage or engage their constituents on immigration, throwing several of our lives into uncertainty.
Weeks ago, a federal appeals court heard arguments on whether or not the Obama administration had the legal authority to establish DACA. It is disheartening to see the way this case mirrors the recent Supreme Court case that ended federal constitutional protections of abortion rights. Once again, a state government is using the court system as an attempt to stop and end federal policies.
I want to assure all of you that even if the court rules DACA to be unlawful, it will not result in an immediate end to the program. It is likely that the case will be appealed to the Supreme Court.
The best way to protect Dreamers now is to urge Congress and the administration to pass legislation that will give Dreamers a pathway to citizenship. Dreamers deserve to have a more stable status in the United States, a status that can withstand the constant changes in administrations.

In solidarity,
Yanira Merino

Pursuing a higher education is often not attainable for everyone. Finances and documentation status often plays a large role, so we beg the question: what programs exist to help students aid their studies? This week we sat down with Nardi Velasquez and Ethan Mercado, the co-community outreach coordinators for UndocuMason. This student-led organization aims to create a more inclusive environment for undocumented immigrants through education and advocacy. El Cafecito is now available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Podbean!
