Washington, DC — The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of USW International President Tom Conway. Conway was an extraordinary champion of worker’s rights and a man who embodied union values through and through. For over forty years, he dedicated himself to USW and our cause, working to create a modern labor movement that allows workers of all backgrounds to thrive.

Tom Conway began his career working at the Burns Harbor Works of Bethlehem Steel, joining USW Local 6787 in 1978. He joined the union’s international staff in 1989 and served as International Vice President for 14 years, before being elected as International President in 2019.

Xochitl Cobarruvias, Executive Vice-President of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) and Chief of Staff of USW Local 675, “By losing Tom, we have lost a giant in our union and in our movement. As a president, he committed himself daily to our cause, always fighting so every worker could have the ability to work and live with dignity. We send our condolences to his loved ones and to his family at USW, and we honor him by continuing his fight for steelworkers, for labor, and working families everywhere.”
